Abud Efendi Mansion

The Abud Efendi Mansion, located on the Kandilli shore, is considered one of the most special and beautiful mansions of the Bosphorus.
This elegant yalı, positioned against the Aşiyan hills on the European side, is striking at first glance with its two-story white wooden facade and historical grandeur, located in one of the narrowest parts of the Istanbul Bosphorus. With its approximately 170-year history reflecting the Bosphorus lifestyle of the Ottoman era, the structure continues to maintain its beauty today, gathering admiration-filled gazes from those passing by on the Bosphorus. Thanks to its historical texture and impressive silhouette, it offers both local and foreign visitors a vibrant scene of history during boat tours.

History

The construction of Abud Efendi Yalısı dates back to the mid-19th century. Designed by the famous architect Garabet Amira Balyan of the era, the mansion was commissioned for Altunizade Necip Bey, a prominent banker and statesman during the reign of Sultan Abdülmecid. The structure, inspired by the architectural style of Dolmabahçe Palace, resembles a small palace itself with its fine wood craftsmanship and gilded interior decoration details. In 1855, it became the new property of French Baron Vandeuvre, who resided in this magnificent building for many years.

In 1900, the mansion was purchased by Mehmet Abud Efendi, a silk and leather merchant of Syrian origin. Mehmet Abud Efendi, who also served as the president of the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce, and his family lived in this mansion for about 80 years; thus, the structure gained fame as "Abud Efendi Mansion" associated with the family surname. The mansion, which hosted the Abud Family for much of the 20th century, was purchased in 1980 by İsmail Özdoyuran, the founder of Salat Oils, one of the leading names in the food sector. The structure, which is classified as private property, underwent extensive restoration in the mid-1980s following this change of ownership. The mansion, which has a total of 18 rooms and 2 large halls, has been restored through renovation works to preserve its former grandeur in both its interior and exterior.

The Abud Efendi Mansion, which attracts attention as much for its historical value as for its place in popular culture, has hosted many series and films. Particularly its use as a filming location for television series such as 'Gümüş' and 'Lale Devri' has made the mansion well-known to a wide audience. Through these productions and series, the mansion has not only drawn the interest of local viewers but has also become one of the favorite spots on the Bosphorus tour routes for foreign tourists.
