Andonaki Mansion

Andonaki Mansion

While cruising on the Bosphorus, you will be greeted by the Andonaki Mansion on the Paşabahçe shoreline.
This mansion, which looks like a single magnificent structure with its twin architecture, immediately catches the eye with its wooden decorations and details in different styles. Positioned right by the sea, the elegant silhouette of the building rising above the water creates admiration among those who gaze at it, merging with the blue waters of the Bosphorus. Especially in the early and last light of the day, the historical texture of the mansion and its symmetrical facade leave an unforgettable first impression on the boats passing through the Bosphorus.

History

The Andonaki Yalı, built at the end of the 19th century, carries the influences of Anglo-Saxon domestic architecture, differing from the traditional Ottoman architecture of the period. The structure is an eclectic and symmetrical coastal residence designed to be twin with the similar yalı next to it. It takes its name from its first owner, Andonaki, who had to leave Istanbul during the years of the Independence War (Turkish War of Independence). At the time the yalı was constructed, Paşabahçe, also referred to as 'İncirliköy' in the region, was a neighborhood where non-Muslim Ottoman citizens also lived. This yalı has hosted the Greek-origin Andonaki family as part of the cosmopolitan life in the Bosphorus.

As the Republic era began, the Andonaki Yalı, which changed hands, continued to exist as one of the most exquisite examples of civil architecture in the Bosphorus in the following years. This four-story elegant mansion, which is a historical artifact, was registered as a cultural asset in 1971 to be protected. Today, the yalı, which is privately owned, can be viewed from the outside and still reflects its former glory with its own dock. From the outside, Andonaki Yalı has a magnificent atmosphere filled with traces of the past; although the interior is not open for visits, the façade and overall appearance offer an impressive experience for those who wish to witness the history of the Bosphorus.
