While cruising on the Bosphorus in Istanbul, a magnificent mansion lined up along the shore in the Anatolian Hisarı neighborhood of the Beykoz district immediately catches the eye: the Bahriyeli Sedat Bey Mansion.
The historic mansion, with its Neo-Baroque wooden architecture, elegant decorations, and wide facade, stands out among the other waterfront villas due to its size and decoration. Especially known to the public as the "Manolyalı Mansion" because of the large magnolia tree in its garden, the building catches the eye of those passing through the Bosphorus at first glance. Rising right by the waters of the Bosphorus, this villa offers one of the most impressive views in this part of Istanbul, thanks to its location and detailed exterior craftsmanship.
History
The history of the Bahriyeli Sedat Bey Mansion dates back to the 19th century. The mansion was built in 1847 by Mustafa Reşid Pasha, one of the famous statesmen of the Tanzimat period. The Italian-born Fossati brothers (Gaspare and Giuseppe Fossati), who were architects during the reign of Sultan Abdülmecid, were responsible for the design of the structure and reflected the influences of European Baroque architecture in the mansion. Bahriyeli Sedat Bey, after whom the mansion is named, is the grandson of Mustafa Reşid Pasha and was an Ottoman statesman who served as the Minister of the Navy (Bahriye Nazırı) responsible for naval affairs during the reign of Sultan II. Abdulhamid.
Mr. Sedat, being an important figure in the history of Ottoman naval history, has his family heritage mansion referred to by his name. The mansion, which was used in the past as two separate sections for the harem and the selamlık, continued to exist as a private residence under the ownership of different families in subsequent years and was protected as a cultural asset in 1971. Having undergone various restorations over the years, the Bahriyeli Sedat Bey Mansion is now one of the best-preserved historical mansions that can be seen from the outside.
