Debreli İsmail Pasha Mansion

Debreli İsmail Pasha Mansion

While gliding on the Bosphorus by boat, an elegant Ottoman mansion rising right next to Beylerbeyi Mosque and in the shadow of the 15 July Martyrs Bridge immediately catches the eye.
This impressive structure is the Debreli İsmail Pasha Mansion, and with its approximately 140-year history, it is an important work that adds both grandeur and nostalgia to the shoreline silhouette of the Bosphorus. With its historical texture and elegant stance by the seaside, the mansion captivates the attention of all visitors, both local and foreign, and at first glance, it inspires admiration as one of the most striking buildings on the Anadolu side of the Istanbul Bosphorus.

History

Debreli İsmail Pasha Mansion was built by the famous architect Alexandre Vallaury by Debreli İsmail Hakkı Pasha during the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid II at the end of the 19th century. İsmail Hakkı Pasha was an important statesman and Debre MP (deputy) in charge of the supplies of the Ottoman army. From the end of the 1870s, when it was built, until 1909, the mansion was used as the private residence of the pasha's family on the shores of the Bosphorus. This mansion was raised on the site of another mansion of the late 18th century, which was located on the same site before its construction; Today, the ruins of the historical boathouse in front of the mansion can still be seen as a memory of that old mansion. In addition, the mansion, which witnessed the history of Turkish cinema, was one of the places where the 1966 movie "Oh Beautiful Istanbul", starring Sadri Alışık, was shot.

A large fire that broke out on March 14, 1983, almost completely devastated the wooden mansion. With the initiative of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, a comprehensive restoration process began in the 1990s. In light of available survey projects and old photographs, the structure was rebuilt in accordance with its original form using reinforced concrete between 1993 and 1996, and in 1996, it was opened to tourism as a boutique hotel named Bosphorus Palace Hotel. While all the details damaged in the fire were meticulously reconstructed, efforts were made to preserve the historical character of the mansion. Today, this magnificent mansion continues to operate as a hotel, keeping its former glory alive. Even the approximately 200-year-old stone boat house at sea level of the mansion has been preserved through restoration and has been repurposed as the hotel's Boathouse Restaurant. Thus, the Debreli İsmail Pasha Mansion continues to carry its story from the past to the present as a modern living space.
