This historic building, which catches the eye at first glance when passing through the Bosphorus, stands out immediately in the landscape with its yellow exterior and white decorative details. The structure, which bears the elegant lines of Ottoman palace architecture, has a mesmerising silhouette that makes those looking at it from the sea feel as if they are part of the past. The Galatasaray University building, which reflects its deep history and architectural beauty, leaves an unforgettable first impression, especially for those taking a boat or yacht tour of the Bosphorus.

History of the Galatasaray University

The main building of Galatasaray University was built in 1871 during the reign of Ottoman Sultan Abdülaziz in the 19th century. Designed by Sarkis Balyan, a renowned palace architect of the time, the building was originally part of the Feriye Palaces complex. This palace complex was built along the Bosphorus coast for the accommodation of members of the royal family, alongside the Dolmabahçe and Çırağan Palaces. Indeed, Sultan Abdülaziz resided in the Feriye Palace for a time after being deposed and passed away there in 1876. The main building was officially recorded as the Sahilsarayı of Ottoman Prince İbrahim Tevfik Efendi. Throughout its history, the structure has witnessed numerous events and harbours many stories, earning it an important place in Istanbul's historical heritage.

After the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the abandoned palace buildings were allocated to educational institutions. The current building of Galatasaray University also served as a school for a long time during the Republican era. From 1927 onwards, part of the Feriye Palaces housed a maritime school and other educational institutions, while the main building was used as the girls' section of Galatasaray High School from 1967. After Galatasaray High School adopted co-educational status, the building became vacant and was transferred to the newly established Galatasaray University in 1992. Thus, this palace-like structure gained an identity as an educational institution and began to house the university's faculties and administrative units.

On 22 January 2013, a major fire broke out in this historic building, causing severe damage to the roof and upper floors and rendering the building unusable for a period of time. Although many valuable books and works were damaged in the fire, a comprehensive restoration project was initiated, and the building was restored to its original form. The restoration was completed in May 2019, and the main building reopened for university use during the 2019-2020 academic year. Today, the administrative offices of Galatasaray University and some of its faculties are located in this historic building. Although general visits to the building are not possible as it is an active educational institution, even seeing and photographing this magnificent structure from the outside is an impressive experience for visitors.
