Hadi Semi Bey Mansion

Hadi Semi Bey Mansion

The Hadi Semi Bey Mansion, located in the Kandilli neighborhood on the Anatolian side of the Bosphorus, is a striking building that is immediately noticeable in the silhouette of the Bosphorus with its dazzling red (aşı paint) façade.
Passing through the Bosphorus by boat, this elegant Ottoman mansion with white shuttered windows and a pier extending into the water impresses visitors. The mansion, which retains its historical texture, is like an impressive window opening to Istanbul's past, along with the greenery surrounding it and the other nearby old mansions. The silhouette reflected in the waters of the Bosphorus leaves an unforgettable first impression on both domestic and foreign tourists.

History

This mansion, estimated to have been built in the 19th century, was owned by two British doctors who worked in Istanbul in the early 1900s, which is why it was called 'Mumford House' for many years. After the end of World War I, when the British doctors decided to leave Istanbul, they sold the mansion to a Greek shipowner named Likardopulos; finally, in 1946, it was taken over by Lawyer Hadi Semi. Mr. Hadi Semi acquired this mansion in return for the properties he left in Thessaloniki after the population exchange, restoring this Ottoman heritage site in his name. The mansion has been known by his name ever since.

Over time, Hadi Semi Bey Mansion has undergone some physical changes. The bath section of the mansion was destroyed during a chemical production activity carried out by a tenant inside the house in the past. During the restoration works in 1960, unfortunately, the northern wing of the harem part of the mansion and the cihannüma (scenic viewing pavilion) on the attic completely disappeared. Additionally, it is known that the small lemon house (greenhouse) adjacent to the structure was converted into a swimming pool. Despite all these changes, the mansion continues to be one of the rare examples of civil architecture in the Bosphorus, largely preserving its historical and architectural value.
