History
The history of the Hamit Pasha Mansion dates back to the 18th century. The first owner of the mansion was Halil Hamid Pasha, who served as grand vizier during the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid I. The original mansion from the 18th century changed hands in the following years and came under the ownership of Mehmed Ali Bey, the mayor of Beyoğlu and Istanbul, in the mid-19th century. In 1860, Mehmed Ali Bey renovated the wooden parts of the structure using shipbuilding materials, thus the mansion underwent significant repairs and changes. Hamit Pasha, a statesman who served in the Ottoman army (his real name was Abdulhamid), was exiled to Syria by Sultan Abdulhamid II in 1891 and returned to Istanbul after the declaration of the Second Constitutional Era. In 1912, Hamit Pasha bought this mansion from Mehmed Ali Bey and settled here, living as the owner of the mansion until his death in 1932. During the Republic era, the mansion remained in private ownership and has largely preserved its original appearance to the present day.
