Mabeyinci Faik Bey Mansion

Mabeyinci Faik Bey Mansion

The historic Mabeyinci Faik Bey Mansion, located in the Beylerbeyi neighborhood on the shores of the Bosphorus, immediately catches the attention of passersby with its majestic architecture.
This mansion, built in the late 19th century, is known as one of the most characteristic historical structures on the Beylerbeyi coast. Especially the green-domed towers rising on both sides give the building a fairytale appearance. The overall silhouette of the mansion, which carries the elegant details of classical Ottoman mansion architecture on its facade, leaves a mesmerizing first impression on both local and foreign visitors in the Bosphorus view.

History

The waterfront mansion was built in 1890 by Faik Pasha, the chief chamberlain of Sultan II. Abdülhamid. Faik Pasha, who held an important position in the Yıldız Palace of the time, was known as a statesman with a fondness for art and literature. Thanks to this interest, the waterfront mansion of Chamberlain Faik Bey hosted many literary discussions and music gatherings during the years it was constructed; moreover, two of the Pasha's daughters, Tanburi Faize Ergin and Fahire Fersan, became well-known composers in Turkish music in later years. Although the architect is unknown, it is noteworthy that the style of traditional Ottoman architecture was preferred over the popular European influences of the time in the design of the structure.

When it came to the Republican period, the mansion underwent a restoration in the 1950s and lost some of its original features in the process. Nevertheless, thanks to its double-storey bay window (section with a balcony with a projecting balcony), it continues to reflect the dignified splendor of Ottoman taste. Princess Esra, the wife of the Nizam of Hyderabad, Bereket Shah, who was the granddaughter of the last Ottoman caliph, Abdülmecid Efendi, also lived in the mansion for a while; This situation adds a different value to the mansion in terms of history. Another event that adds to the fame of the mansion is that it hosted the international movie "Topkapı", which was made in 1964. In this theft-themed movie, in which famous actors of the period such as Melina Mercouri and Peter Ustinov starred, some parts of the mansion were used as scenes. Today, Mabeyci Faik Bey Mansion is a private property owned by the famous Sabancı family (Hacı Sabancı). For this reason, although the building can be seen from the outside, it is not open to visitors and its beauty can best be watched over the Bosphorus.
