History

Mahmut Nedim Pasha Mansion was built in the second half of the 19th century by Mahmut Nedim Pasha, the Ottoman ambassador in Vienna. The Pasha reflected the impressions he gained in Europe during his diplomatic and statesman duties in the mansion's architecture. At the location of the mansion, there used to be a residence belonging to the Pasha's grandfather; when this old structure was demolished and a new mansion was built in its place, the building began to be referred to by the family surname. The new mansion featured an aesthetic design that combined Ottoman civil architecture with European influences. Particularly, the tower section inspired by buildings in European cities (Vienna and Prague) has become a significant characteristic that sets this mansion apart from other structures along the Bosphorus.

Over time, the mansion has experienced various misfortunes. Historical sources indicate that the Mahmut Nedim Pasha Mansion underwent numerous fires in the past and was completely rebuilt three times after burning down. By the 20th century, however, the fate of the mansion took a different turn. In 1942, it was donated to the Red Crescent (Hilal-i Ahmer) by the grandchildren of the Pasha for a symbolic fee, and during World War II, it served for a long time as a nursing school and student dormitory. Nurses who trained there during this time were assigned across Turkey, and the mansion functioned as an institution contributing to health education for a period. However, over the years, due to the indifference of the Red Crescent, the building was left neglected and fell into ruin. Ignoring the wishes of the donating family, the mansion was put up for sale in 1996, and after several attempts, it was purchased in 2004 by businessman Yalçın Sabancı. Sabancı restored and rebuilt the mansion in an authentic manner, bringing this cultural heritage back to the Bosphorus. Today, the four-story building, equipped with all modern amenities, is privately owned and continues to exist as one of the pearls of the Bosphorus while preserving its former glory.
