Müşir Fuat Pasha Mansion is a historic Bosphorus mansion located on the European side of the Istanbul Bosphorus, at the southern tip of İstinye Bay, on the shores of Tokmak Point.
This waterfront mansion, built in the second half of the 19th century, is immediately noticeable along the Bosphorus line with its neo-classical style architecture and stunning façade. Its location right by the shore and warm color tones captivate those passing by from the sea, making it an integral part of the Bosphorus view. With its architectural beauty and historical texture, the mansion attracts the interest of both local and foreign visitors, leaving an impressive first impression.
History
Although the exact year of construction of the mansion is not known, it is believed to have been built in the early 1870s by Haci Mohsin Khan, the Persian ambassador of the time. Haci Mohsin Khan made long efforts to extend his term in Istanbul but had to return to his country in the early 1890s. In the following years, the mansion came into the possession of Billuri Mehmet Efendi, who served as the Minister of Post and Telegraph; it was sold by Mehmet Efendi, who was experiencing financial difficulties, to Şerif Hüseyin, a member of the Ottoman State Council. Şerif Hüseyin, who held the title of Emir of Mecca in the late period of the Ottoman Empire and later became the King of Hijaz, transferred the mansion to the famous Ottoman Marshal Müşir Fuat Pasha in 1908 and left Istanbul. Müşir (Marshal) Fuat Pasha was a military officer and statesman known for his brave and outspoken character; due to his fearless attitude, he was nicknamed 'Crazy Fuat,' and the mansion began to be referred to by this name among the public.
During the Republic period, Müşir Fuat Pasha Mansion hosted public institutions. The building, sold to the Maritime Bank in 1940, was moved to the İstinye Shipyard Management in 1948. During this institutional use, significant changes were made to the original state of the building. For example, the cihannüma added during Fuat Pasha's period was removed; the shape of the roof was changed, and an arched passageway connecting to the roadway at the second floor level was constructed. During this process, the harem section of the mansion was completely demolished. With the end of shipyard activities, the mansion was allocated to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; after being used for a while by the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization, it began to serve as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Istanbul Representation. Today, the building, used by an official institution, can be seen from the outside but is not open to general visits.
