On the Anatolian side of the Bosphorus, a graceful mansion rises on the shores of Beylerbeyi: Mustafa Reşit Efendi Yalı.
This historic mansion, which stands out with its simple appearance among the ornate palaces and modern buildings, is one of the rare structures that carries the historical texture of the Bosphorus to the present day with its location right by the shore. With its symmetrical windows, façade opening to the dock, and shadow cast on the water, it offers a postcard-like view together with the Bosphorus Bridge in the background. When viewed from the boats passing through the Bosphorus, this building quietly reflects the elegance of the past in today's Istanbul and attracts the interest of almost everyone.
History
Although the exact construction date of the Mustafa Reşit Efendi Yalı is not known, its architectural style indicates that the building was constructed in the second half of the 19th century. The yalı takes its name from Mustafa Reşit Pasha, a statesman recognized as the architect of the Tanzimat Edict in the Ottoman period. As a characteristic example of traditional Bosphorus yali, the building is constructed with a wooden frame technique and features the boat house arrangement of its time on its pier. One of the wings of the yali, which has deteriorated over time, was lost in a fire, and the remaining part was completely demolished due to its ruined state. However, the coastal section, which was rebuilt in accordance with the original, was registered for protection in 1971 by the Real Estate Historical Artifacts and Monuments Board with inventory number 158. Today, the yali, which has been restored, continues to exist along the Bosphorus and is an important example of civil architecture that preserves its historical heritage.
