Noel Eram Mansion

Noel Eram Mansion

Noel Eram Mansion is a historic mansion that immediately catches the eye with its elegant silhouette on the shores of the Bosphorus in Istanbul.
Located in the Çengelköy neighborhood, this structure stands out from the modern buildings around it, particularly with its fine details on the facade and balanced architecture. The Noel Eram Yalı, one of the 600 historic mansions referred to as the pearls of the Bosphorus, captivates visitors at first sight with its beauty and location. Also known to the public as Kuleli Yalısı, the building resembles a fairytale mansion as one passes by the coast with its architectural element resembling a small tower.

History

The construction date of the Noel Eram Mansion corresponds to the late 19th century; it is recorded as a work of the Abdülhamid era from 1898. The initial owner of the structure, who also gave his name to it, is Noel Eram. Noel Eram was the director of the Credit Lyonnais French Bank in Istanbul during the Ottoman period and lived in this mansion with his family for many years. Over time, as the bank closed, Eram retired and returned to France for a while. During this period, the mansion gained fame as one of the best-furnished and most magnificent houses of the time. Upon the death of Noel Eram, the mansion was passed on to other family members.

The next story of the mansion has been shaped by family legacies and examples of kindness. After the death of Noel Eram, his sister Mademoiselle Liza lived alone in this magnificent mansion for a while. Liza took a young girl named Smaro from Gumulcine, Greece as her helper and raised her almost like a member of her family. Near her death, Liza gifted the mansion to this helper as a sign of her gratitude and married Smaro off, helping her to establish a home. Smaro and her husband later sold this historic mansion and moved away. The new owner, who purchased the mansion in the 1970s, undertook a careful restoration, renewing the structure while staying true to its original texture, and has continued to live in this house as a family since 1974. The Kuleli Mansion, which remained in the same family for nearly 50 years, was finally put up for sale in July 2019 for 190 million TL due to the expansion of the family. The news of the sale of this building, regarded as one of the most valuable yalis of the Bosphorus, was covered in the press at the time with headlines such as 'The Pearl of the Bosphorus, the historic Kuleli Yalı is for sale.' Today, Noel Eram Yalı is registered as a 2nd-degree historical monument, and while it can be seen from the outside, it can only be admired from a distance since it is private property.
