The Şeyh Talat Efendi Mansion (also known as the Silver Mansion), located in the Anadoluhisarı neighborhood of the Beykoz district on the Anatolian side of the Istanbul Bosphorus, is an elegant Ottoman mansion that immediately catches attention with its historical texture.
The two-story wooden structure, reflecting the architectural aesthetics of the 19th century, creates a striking tableau alongside the centuries-old walls of the Anadolu Hisarı fortress in the Bosphorus skyline. With a plan suitable for the traditional Turkish house arrangement of haremlik-selamlık, this mansion carries the spirit of the past into the present as one of the oldest remaining examples of civilian architecture in the region. The structure, instantly noticeable for boats passing through the Bosphorus, leaves a strong first impression on all visitors, both local and foreign, with its historical atmosphere and location.
History
Şeyh Talat Efendi Mansion was built in the mid-19th century by Şeyh Talat Efendi of the Halveti order. Talat Efendi was a mystic engaged in trade during his time, and he established a special semahane (a place for dhikr) in his mansion to hold dhikr ceremonies with his disciples on Friday and Monday nights. This mansion, which consists of a selamlık (the area where male guests are received) and a haremlik (the family living area) under the same roof, is one of the rare examples reflecting Ottoman housing traditions. The mansion remained in the possession of the same family for many years, and over time, the haremlik and selamlık sections were passed on to different relatives through inheritance.
Recently, the historic mansion underwent a comprehensive restoration and was revitalized. The harem section, inherited from relatives, was restored and opened as a fish restaurant named Gümüş Yalı. Thus, after being closed for years, this impressive mansion on the Bosphorus has been made available both for the conservation of cultural heritage and for the service of Istanbulites. Today, part of the mansion is used as a restaurant, providing visitors with the opportunity to take a journey through history.
