Küçüksu Pavilion is a pavilion located on the Anatolian side of Istanbul, within the borders of Beykoz district and known as one of the most elegant historical buildings of the Bosphorus. It is also referred to as Küçüksu Palace.
History of Küçüksu Pavilion
Küçüksu Pavilion was first built during the reign of Sultan Mahmud I (1730-1754) upon the positive response of Divitdâr Mehmed Emin Pasha to his proposal. However, this first structure was not as magnificent as today's pavilion and was mostly used as a wooden hunting lodge.
During the reign of Sultan Abdülmecid (1839-1861), the old building was demolished and the present elegant pavilion was built in 1856.
The architect of the Küçüksu Pavilion is the famous Ottoman palace architect Garabet Balyan and his son Nigoğayos Balyan. The Balyan family took part in the construction of many important buildings in the last period of the Ottoman Empire.
Küçüksu Pavilion was a place frequently used by the sultans for hunting and resting purposes during the Ottoman period. In addition, it has been preferred as a place where they can watch the unique view of the Bosphorus and get sea air.
Küçüksu Pavilion was opened to the public as a museum during the Republican period. Today, it is managed by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and attracts great attention from both local and foreign tourists.
Architecture of Küçüksu Pavilion
Küçüksu Pavilion was built as a synthesis of neoclassical and baroque architectural styles. The pavilion, which has two floors and a rectangular plan, has very elegant and finely crafted details.
On the exterior, marble decorations, elegant columns and sculptures stand out, while in the interiors, ceiling decorations, wall frescoes, wood carvings and crystal chandeliers attract attention.
The interior of Küçüksu Pavilion is specially designed for the sultan and his family, and there are sections such as halls, dining room, bedroom and reception hall among the rooms. Each room is furnished with furniture reflecting the rich Ottoman decoration style of the period.
