Beylerbeyi Palace

Beylerbeyi Palace

Beylerbeyi Palace is an important palace built by the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century, located in the Beylerbeyi district of the Üsküdar district, on the Anatolian side of the Bosphorus.

History of Beylerbeyi Palace

Beylerbeyi Palace was built by Sultan Abdulaziz between 1861 and 1865. On the site of the palace, there was previously a wooden pavilion built during the reign of Sultan Mahmud II. This building was demolished at the request of Sultan Abdulaziz and a new palace was built in its place. Beylerbeyi Palace was built to be used as the summer palace of the Ottoman sultans and was used for resting and hosting foreign state guests, especially in the summer months. Beylerbeyi Palace, which was opened to the public as a museum during the Republican period, still serves visitors as a museum-palace today. The rooms, furniture, decorations and gardens of the palace reflect the luxurious lifestyle of the late Ottoman Empire.

Beylerbeyi Palace Architecture

Beylerbeyi Palace has an architecture that is a mixture of neoclassical, baroque and empirical styles. Famous architects of the period, such as Sarkis Balyan and Agop Balyan, took part in the construction of the palace. Although the exterior is quite plain-looking, the interiors are full of rich ornaments. Beylerbeyi Palace has three floors, two main floors and a basement floor. There are 26 rooms, 6 living rooms and 6 bathrooms in total. The rooms on the ground floor of the palace are very close to sea level. In this way, a cool environment is provided, especially in the hot summer months. On the sea front of Beylerbeyi Palace, there is a pavilion where the sultan is close to the sea. This pavilion is designed to watch the view of the Bosphorus in the best way. Around the palace is a large garden, which is one of the most beautiful examples of Ottoman landscape art. The large pools in the garden add a different beauty to the palace. In addition, there are small pavilions and pavilions decorated with Chinese and Japanese motifs in the garden.
