History of Kuleli Military High School

Kuleli Military High School was established on September 21, 1845 by the order of Sultan Abdülmecid under the name of "Mekteb-i Fünun-ı İdadiye". The school first started to provide education in Maçka Barracks, then moved to Kuleli Barracks in 1846. Due to the tower-like architecture of the barracks, the school was named "Kuleli Military High School". In 1868, he moved to Galatasaray High School and returned to Kuleli Barracks in 1872. The barracks, which were badly damaged as a result of a fire in 1877, were repaired in 1879 and started to provide education again. After the proclamation of the Republic, the school continued to provide education with modern educational methods and scientific approach. It was closed for a short time in 1924 within the scope of the Law on Education, and was reopened in 1925. After the coup attempt on July 15, 2016, Kuleli Military High School was closed on July 31, 2016. The closure of the school is part of an arrangement to reduce the influence of FETÖ in educational institutions. The campus of Kuleli Military High School was transferred to the National Defense University after its closure, and various military training programs are organized here.
