Defterdarburnu Mosque, located on the European side of the Istanbul Bosphorus between Ortaköy and Kuruçeşme, is positioned right by the shore. Even though it does not have grand large domes or tall minarets, its elegant silhouette captivates those who see it.
This small historic mosque by the Bosphorus, amidst the sounds of the waves and the vibrancy of the city, gives a peaceful impression at first glance, almost like a serene resting point. This structure, inherited from the Ottoman era, offers a special view that completes the historical and natural beauty of Istanbul, especially when viewed from the sea, along with the bridges and waterfront mansions surrounding it.
History
The mosque, commissioned by İbrahim Pasha, the treasurer of the Ottoman finance in the second half of the 17th century (1661), has undergone several repairs over the centuries. The first major restoration took place in 1833 during the reign of Sultan Mahmud II, the second in 1885 during the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid II, the third in 1941 carried out by the General Directorate of Foundations; finally, a comprehensive restoration in 2011 restored it to its current appearance.
The mosque is built above the ground on the shore, with its lower part made of stone and the upper structure made of traditional wooden material. During its construction period, there was a three-eye boathouse (small boat garage) at its base, which allowed access to this place by sea in the past. Over time, these pier openings were closed, and a coastal road was constructed. Today, because the mosque is quite below the Muallim Naci Street, which passes above, it may be overlooked when viewed from land. However, when descending to its courtyard via stairs or approaching from the sea front, the elegance and historical atmosphere of the structure can be immediately felt.
