Hattat Mansion

Hattat Mansion

Located on the European side of the Istanbul Bosphorus, the Hattat Mansion on the Yeniköy coast stands out with its modern architecture among the historical buildings surrounding it.
The white facade, adorned with wide wooden cladding, and the three-story balconies extending towards the sea add a different elegance to the silhouette of the mansion. A visitor passing by on a boat from the Bosphorus is immediately impressed by the mansion's compact yet striking stance and its contemporary design infused with traditional elements. Especially, the rhythmic texture created by the protruding balconies and the use of modern materials leave an unforgettable impression at first glance.

History

The history of Hattat Yalısı dates back to the second half of the 20th century. The mansion was designed and built by one of the prominent architects of the period, Sedad Hakkı Eldem, between 1965 and 1967. Initially commissioned for the family of the statesman Reşat Şemsettin Sirer, the structure was known as Sirer Yalısı in its early days. Architect Eldem chose a compact and deep layout to make efficient use of the narrow plot on the Yeniköy shoreline where the mansion would be constructed. As a result, the final work emerged as a unique mansion that combined the possibilities of modern architecture with the traditional aesthetics of the Bosphorus, characterized by its narrow yet three-story balcony, cantilevers with steel supports, and oak wood facade cladding.

After the Sirer Family, who were the first owners of the mansion, it was purchased by the Hattat Family, one of Turkey's famous industrial families, in the 1980s. With this transfer, the mansion took on the name it is known by today, "Hattat Mansion." After acquiring the property, the Hattat Family undertook extensive renovation and interior decoration work to adapt the comfort of the mansion to the necessities of modern times. It is known that additional features such as an open and closed swimming pool were also added to the building during that period. Today, Hattat Mansion remains a private property, and while it can be seen from the outside, its interior is not open to visitors. With its elegant architecture and interesting history, this mansion continues to exist as one of the rare structures reflecting both the cultural heritage of the Bosphorus and the design understanding of the 20th century.
