History

The Mansion of Miner Arif Bey is an example of the holiday architecture of the Ottoman Constitutional Period, built in eclectic style at the end of the 19th century (around 1900). The mansion was commissioned and initially owned by Miner Arif Bey, who named the structure after himself. The three-story mansion has a ground floor made of masonry, while the upper two floors are constructed of wood in accordance with traditional Ottoman residential architecture. Later, the mansion passed from Arif Bey to another individual named Süreyya Bey, and for this reason, it was also referred to as the Süreyya Bey Mansion for a while. In the late Ottoman period, the building was used for social purposes as a Sipahi Ocağı Club (equestrian club) for some time. After the declaration of the Republic, it served as a recruitment office (military enlistment office) for many years starting in 1923. Due to its historical significance, the mansion was registered as a cultural asset requiring protection by the High Council of Antiquities and Monuments in 1971. Today, the Miner Arif Bey Mansion, which can be seen from the outside and is under protection, is considered one of the rare historical structures of the Bosphorus.
