Commodore Remzi Bey Mansion

Commodore Remzi Bey Mansion

This historic mansion, notable for its neoclassical architecture, is located on the shores of the Bosphorus in Istanbul, right next to the Anadolu Hisarı Fortress.
The building, referred to as one of the most iconic classical Ottoman mansions of the Bosphorus, attracts the attention of passersby with its elegant and majestic stance. Thanks to its long and vertical architecture, it creates a unique silhouette alongside the medieval Anadolu Hisarı fortress, adding a distinct beauty to the view of the Bosphorus.

History

The Commodore Remzi Bey Mansion was built in 1917 by Commodore Remzi Bey, who held the rank of commodore in the Ottoman Navy. Shortly afterwards, during the early years of the Republic, it was purchased by General Mümtaz Aktay Pasha, who had served on fronts from the Balkan Wars to the War of Independence. The building was registered as a cultural asset in 1971 and put under protection, and the following year it was sold to the famous scientist and politician Erdal İnönü by Mümtaz Pasha's family.

Erdal İnönü renovated the mansion with a reinforced concrete frame, turning it into a sturdy structure that preserves its original style, and noted in his will, 'Let it be a museum after me.' For many years, it was known among the public as the İnönü Mansion or, in memory of its previous owner, the Mümtaz Paşa Mansion, as it belonged to Erdal İnönü's wife Sevinç İnönü and their family. In the 1990s, due to financial problems faced by the İnönü family, the mansion became subject to enforcement proceedings; as the debts could not be paid, it was put up for sale through enforcement in 2017. In the same year, Namık Tanık, a businessman from Ankara, purchased the mansion for approximately 20 million TL, resolving the family’s debt issues and becoming the new owner of the mansion. This historic property, which is now privately owned, can be seen and photographed from the outside, but it is not open to visitors.
