Madam Agavni Mansion

Madam Agavni Mansion

On the shores of the Istanbul Bosphorus, Madam Agavni Mansion, which adorns the historical texture of the Kuzguncuk neighborhood, is an elegant structure that immediately catches your attention as you pass through the Bosphorus.
With its two-story wooden architecture and a rooftop extending over the water, this mansion is like a window opening to the past when viewed from the sea. Known as one of the pearls of the Bosphorus, this structure captivates both local and foreign visitors with its wooden decorations and unique location. The scenery created as the gentle waves of the Bosphorus hit the mansion's walls makes you feel as if you are witnessing the historical beauties of Istanbul.

History

It is estimated that the Madam Agavni Mansion, built during the Ottoman period in the 19th century, was constructed in the 1860s. It takes its name from Madam Agavni Muratyan, who owned the mansion for a period, and has been known by this name for many years. The mansion, a product of the eclectic architectural understanding of the time, possesses details that elegantly blend Ottoman and European styles. The wooden structure is separated from the sea by a long, slender quay and features an attic that extends towards both the Bosphorus and the neighboring plot. With these architectural characteristics, the mansion is an important example of civil architecture that reflects the cosmopolitan culture and aesthetic understanding of 19th century Istanbul.

Over time, Madam Agavni Mansion has changed hands many times and has been used by different families. Unfortunately, by the late 20th century, the original wooden structure of the mansion could not be preserved; in the 1990s, the building was renovated with concrete elements, resulting in changes to its historical fabric. However, starting from the 1970s, the mansion, which was registered as a cultural asset, underwent a comprehensive restoration (reconstruction) process in 2004 and has regained its historical appearance as much as possible. Today, the property, which is privately owned, belongs to the famous businessman Ali Kibar and his family. The mansion, which offers a picturesque beauty from the outside, is under protection as per the decision of the Real Estate Antiquities Council and continues to exist as a living witness of historical heritage on this tranquil shore of the Bosphorus.
