Saip Özden Mansion

History

This mansion on the Yeniköy coast was built in 1851 by a foreman of Greek origin. During the mid-19th century, when it was constructed, there was an increasing interest in Western architecture in the Ottoman Empire due to the Tanzimat reform period, and the Saip Özden Mansion was designed in a North European style, outside of traditional Turkish architecture. The wooden mansion is three stories high, and its triangular pedimented projection on the northern façade, along with its steep roof form, gives it a look reminiscent of chalets in the Swiss Alps.

The mansion takes its name from its owner during the Republican period, Saip Özden. Saip Özden, who owned this historic structure for a time in the 20th century, became well-known enough to have the mansion named after himself. The structure, which changed hands over time, was registered as a cultural asset by the Real Estate Ancient Artifacts and Monuments Council in 1971. Nowadays, Saip Özden Mansion is classified as private property, and while it can be seen and photographed from the outside, it is not open to visitors.
