On the Anatolian side of the Istanbul Bosphorus, the Türker İnanoğlu Yalı stands out with its unique silhouette among the historic Kanlıca mansions lined along the green hills.
While passing through the Bosphorus by boat, this mansion stands out with its solid (stone) structure, unlike the traditional wooden Ottoman mansions. Named after one of the famous producers of Turkish cinema, Türker İnanoğlu, this mansion is one of the elegant pearls of the Bosphorus with its magnificent past and location. Situated close to the Kanlıca Pier, this historical structure rises right by the waters, offering visitors a chance to witness Istanbul's history and enjoy the Bosphorus view. Although it has a simple beauty at first glance, the first impression of the mansion suggests that it hosts a profound historical heritage.
History
The construction of the Türker İnanoğlu Mansion dates back to the first half of the 19th century. The first mansion, built by Baha Molla during the reign of Sultan Mahmud II, was one of the oldest seaside residences in the Kanlıca district. Unfortunately, there is a tragic event hidden in the history of this early mansion: Baha Molla was killed by robbers who entered his mansion one night, and Sultan Mahmud II had the murderers captured and executed in Kanlıca Square. In the following years, the mansion hosted the Minister of Education, the poet Nevres Pasha, and his family. After the death of Nevres Pasha, the building changed hands and underwent some repairs and expansions in the 1880s; even its wooden pier was converted into a stone dock, and a heating system was installed in the backyard, equipping it with the modern comforts of its time. However, this wooden mansion, which witnessed the late Ottoman period, was reduced to ashes in a great fire in 1906.
The land of the mansion was divided in half after the fire, and the part towards the jetty was purchased by the ear, nose, and throat specialist Dr. Hakkı Nevin (father of Türker İnanoğlu). Dr. Hakkı Nevin had a masonry (stone) mansion built in place of the burned mansion in the early 1900s. The Türker İnanoğlu Mansion seen today is a structure from that period, built on a reinforced concrete foundation and with stone walls. The other part of the mansion belonged to Colonel Muzaffer Bey for a while; upon his death, his heirs transferred this part to retired judge Sami Temizel. The masonry mansion, which served as the residence of the İnanoğlu Family until the mid-20th century, was the scene of the childhood and youth memories of young Türker İnanoğlu. The famous producer İnanoğlu immortalized this cultural heritage by frequently mentioning the Kanlıca mansions and the vibrant social life of the neighborhood in his book "En Güzel Köy Bizim Köyümüz: Kanlıca" (The Most Beautiful Village is Our Village: Kanlıca), where he penned his memories.
The mansion, which has witnessed countless events throughout its history, unfortunately could not fully preserve its original texture. By the late 20th century, due to the changes it underwent, it has strayed from a classic mansion appearance. Indeed, the Nevres Pasha' Mansion (the former name of Türker İnanoğlu Mansion), located to the north of the neighboring Mehmet Muhtar Bey Mansion, is now referred to as a structure that no longer exists. In other words, a more modern building is now rising on the site of the old mansion, and the structure is used as private property. Nevertheless, the Türker İnanoğlu Mansion continues to be mentioned along the Bosphorus with its name from the past; its story and name continue to be a part of Istanbul's cultural heritage.
