Emirgan Mosque

Emirgan Mosque

Emirgan Mosque (officially known as Hamid-i Evvel Mosque), rising at a zero-distance position on the European side of the Istanbul Bosphorus, impresses visitors at first glance with its elegant Ottoman architecture and unique location.
The square-planned cut stone body, wooden roof, and single-minaret soaring from the shore make this historic structure a unique addition to the Bosphorus view. The mosque, which serves as a greeting point for boats and yachts passing through the strait, combines with the surrounding plane trees and coastal atmosphere to provide both local and foreign travelers with an unforgettable first impression.

History

This mosque, built by I. Abdülhamid in 1781 in memory of his early deceased prince Mehmed and his mother Hümâşah Hatun, is now more commonly known as the Emirgân Mosque. The mosque, constructed on the site of the seaside palace of Emirgüneoğlu Yusuf Pasha, who gave his name to the Emirgan neighborhood, was erected to keep the memory of the Ottoman dynasty alive along the Bosphorus.

In 1838, Sultan Mahmud II had this mosque, built by his father, undergo a comprehensive renovation that effectively rebuilt it. As a result of this renewal, the architecture of the structure largely reflects the style of the Mahmud II era; indeed, only the original inscription plate at the entrance remains from the reign of Abdulhamid I. Although some elements of the complex such as the bathhouse, bakery, and mill have disappeared over time, the prayer room (muvakkithane) built in different periods, a small imperial pavilion (the sultan's resting place), and a historic fountain can still be seen as part of the mosque complex. During restoration work in 2006, a fire in the mosque caused the dome to collapse and the structure was severely damaged. Subsequently, thanks to a comprehensive restoration completed in 2009, the mosque was repaired while preserving its historical texture and reopened for worship.
