The Istapan Mansion, also known as Çaycı Istapan Mansion, Dr. Hulusi Behçet Mansion, and Necati Aslan Mansion, is a historic waterfront mansion located on the European (Rumeli) side of the Bosphorus in Yeniköy.
This magnificent mansion, built in the 19th century during the Ottoman period, brings a unique interpretation to the Bosphorus waterfront architecture with its Art Nouveau style details. Located on Köybaşı Street, part of the building is three stories high and part is two stories; its asymmetrical facade and dynamic silhouette immediately catch the eye when viewed from the Bosphorus. The octagonal tower-like roof crowning the corner balcony on the seaside, along with the elegantly patterned balcony railings, adds a unique elegance to the structure and reflects traces of Istanbul's Art Nouveau style. The İstapan Mansion, which catches the attention of passersby on the Bosphorus at first glance, is an impressive building that stands out with its architectural details that differentiate it from the other mansions in the area.
History
The exact date and who built the İstapan Mansion is not definitively known; however, the known first owner is Çaycı İstapan, who was of Armenian descent and lived in the 19th century. Later, the famous dermatologist Dr. Hulusi Behçet, who first described the disease that is named after him in the literature, purchased this mansion. Dr. Hulusi Behçet received the title of ordinary professor in 1939 and passed away in 1948.
After Dr. Behçet's death in 1948, the mansion was registered as a cultural asset in 1971 and was sold to Necati Aslan by his heirs in 1991. Since then, the structure, also known as the Necati Aslan Mansion, is privately owned. The mansion is closed to visitors and can only be seen from the outside; it is particularly possible to observe this historic structure while passing from the Bosphorus shore or by sea.
